LIVONIA, Mich.- On a cool, overcast day, it was the Madonna University women's soccer team that electrified the Halloween crowd with a 2-0 victory over Siena Heights in the first round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament at the Madonna Athletics Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The fourth-seeded Crusaders improve to 13-4-2 on the season and advance to the WHAC semifinals for the sixth straight season. MU will face UNOH on Saturday while the Saints season ends with a 13-6-0 record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
It didn't take long for the Crusaders to gain the upper hand as Nicolette Vultaggio found the back of the next in the fourth minute. Sierra Nissan won the ball at midfield and played Vultaggio past the defense and she was able to slip the ball past a diving goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.
-
Not to be outdone, Jamie Moceri tied Vultaggio for the team lead with her 10th goal in the 52nd minute. Megan Verant played a ball over top of the defense and Moceri ran onto the ball on the far side and beat the keeper far post to put MU up 2-0.
-
The Saints had two very clean looks in the contest, but MU goalkeeper Julia Stewart was up to the task each time as she thwarted a pair of 1-v-1 situations to record her 13th shutout of the season.
