Stewart sets @MUCrusadersWSOC single-season shutout record in win over Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -  The Madonna University women's soccer team and goalkeeper Julia Stewart notched a seventh straight shutout and achieved some history on Saturday afternoon at the AQ Athletic Field as a 1-0 win over Aquinas gave the senior keeper her 12th shutout of the season, the most in a single season in program history. For the team, it is the second most in a season tied with the 2005 team and two shy of the record set in 2000 at 14.

The win moves the Crusaders to 12-2-2 on the year and 7-0-2 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play, one point behind University of Northwestern Ohio for the top spot. The Saints fall to 11-4-1 and 7-1-1 in league play, one point behind the Crusaders in third.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After stormy October conditions delayed kickoff by 45 minutes, it was the Crusaders who got on the board first and it proved to be enough. Cristina Moraccini let a ball fly from 30 yards out and a combination of swirling winds and surprise helped the ball find the back of the next for a 1-0 lead.

INSIDE THE BOX

  • Madonna outshot the Saints 17-8 in the contest and held an 8-4 advantage in shots on frame

  • Aquinas had more corner kick opportunities with seven to MU's four

  • Julia Henning paced the offense with four shots while Moraccini took three shots and put two on frame

  • Jamie Moceri and Megan Verant each attempted two hots with one each on frame while Alexis Bozinovski and Brianna Mozariwskyj also had one shot apiece

  • Stewart made four saves in the contest

MILESTONES TO WATCH

  • Stewart (30) is three shutouts shy of Jennifer Barker's (1998-01) 33

  • The Crusaders are two shutouts shy of the program's single-season record of 14 in 2000

UP NEXT

  • The Blue and Gold wrap up their regular season road slate with a trip to Lima, Ohio to face WHAC leading and 13th-ranked University of Northwestern Ohio with kickoff slated for 3 p.m.

  • Live coverage, if available, will be posted at www.mucrusaders.com.
