Stewart ties shutout record as @MUCrusadersWSOC ties Lourdes

LIVONIA, Mich. -  It wasn't they way they wanted it to happen, the the Madonna University women's soccer team recorded a sixth straight shutout, 11th overall, with a scoreless draw against Lourdes University at the Madonna Athletics Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The Crusaders move to 11-2-2 on the year and 6-0-2 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play while the Gray Wolves now sit at 4-8-2 overall and 1-6-1 in league action.

The shutout gives Stewart 11 on the year which matches last years total and is one of only four seasons of at least 11 individual shutouts in program history. The 11 team shutouts are currently tied for the third most in program history behind 12 in 2005 and a record 14 in 2000.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • FIRST HALF

    • Madonna had numerous chances in the opening 45, with eight shots, six on frame, but could not convert as the Lourdes keeper was up to the task.

    • At the other end, the Madonna defense limited the Gray Wolves to three shots, one on goal, but it was by far the best chance of the period as Helena Rammal got a touch from eight yards out and hit it right at Julia Stewart to keep the game scoreless.

  • SECOND HALF

    • Madonna's best chance to in the contest came in the 54th minute as Alyssa Bozinovski carried the ball into the box and tried to go far post, but Kiley Transit, the Lourdes keeper, made the save and the defense was able to clear the rebound.

    • The Blue and Gold had another chance in the 61st minute as Cristina Moraccini took a free kick and nearly slipped it past a diving Transit.

    • In the 74th minute, Nicolette Vultaggio got an open look from 20 yards out and Transit just got a hand on the ball to knock if off the crossbar. Grace Thomas corralled the rebound and took a shot from 33 yards near post that the wind nearly pushed back into the net.

  • OVERTIME

    • Stewart kept the game scoreless in the first extra period as she stopped a shot from nine yards out.

    • Neither team had was able to get a good look in the final 12 minutes in the Crusaders second tie of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX

  • Madonna dominated the box score as they outshot Lourdes 26-6 in the contest which included a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal. MU had more corner kicks (4-2) and was the more aggressive team with five fouls to the Gray Wolves' three.

  • Vultaggio paced the MU offense with six shots, four on frame, while Julia Henning added four shots with three on target.

  • Thomas and Bozinovski both took three shots and put four of the six on goal while six other players attempted at least one shot with four of them took two shots each.

  • The 16 saves the Lourdes' keeper is a program record for the Sylvania, Ohio program.

UP NEXT

  • The Blue and Gold begin the most important stretch of the season when they return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 20 in Grand Rapids for a matchup with Aquinas College who received votes in the most recent poll. Madonna then wraps up their road slate with a showdown in Lima, Ohio with 22nd-ranked University of Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 3 p.m.
