@MUCrusadersWSOC notches fifth straight shutout in 1-0 win

LIVONIA, Mich. -  The Madonna University women's soccer team dominated University of Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday afternoon at the Madonna Athletics Complex and recorded a fifth consecutive shutout with a 1-0 win. The Crusaders, who have not lost a game since a pair of loses Sept. 15 and 18 to No. 9 Cumberland and UD-Mercy, improve to 11-2-1 overall and 6-0-1 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play while the Wolverines fall to 1-7-2 on the season and 1-5-1 in WHAC action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • FIRST HALF

    • The Crusaders peppered the Wolverines keeper in the first 20 minutes but Jordan Anheuser was up to the challenge. In the 15th minute she thwarted a 1-v-1 from Nicolette Vultaggio, then in the 17th minute stopped a pair of shots near post by Julia Henning. Just 30 seconds later she knocked away a Jamie Moceri header off a beautiful cross from Henning.

    • The Blue and Gold finally broke through in the 31st minute as Gabby Ames played a ball over the top of the defense that Kirsten Schapman was able to run down and sneak inside near post for the 1-0 lead.

    • Anhesuer had another impressive save with just under seven minutes to play in the opening 45 as Megan Verant sent a shot on frame from 20 yards out and the keeper made a diving save far post to knock the ball away.

  • SECOND HALF

    • Madonna had shots from Alexis Bozinovski and Vultaggio hit the crossbar in a five minute span and failed to finish on several good crosses in front of goal.

    • With just under four minutes to play, Vultaggio sent another gorgeous cross into the box and Henning got a head on the ball, but the UM-Dearborn keeper was again up to task as she made her 15th save of the contest.

    • Madonna outshot UM-Dearborn 17-1 in the final 45, but just couldn't find the back of the net in the narrow victory.

INSIDE THE BOX

  • The Crusaders outshot the Wolverines 41-2 in the contest with 18 shots on goal to just one for the visitors. MU also had seven corner kicks to the Wolverines' zero.

  • Henning paced the offense with 11 shots, seven on frame while Moceri added six shots, three on goal

  • Vultaggio and Cristina Moraccini each added five shots while four others had at least two and another four players had just one, which included Schapman whose lone shot was on frame and found the back of the net.
