Crusaders fall to the Golden Eagles in Regular Season Finale

Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - On Wednesday evening the Madonna women's soccer team (6-9-3, 4-6-2 WHAC) traveled to Grand Rapids, Mich. to take on Cornerstone University (8-6-3, 5-0-3 WHAC). The Crusaders would put up a valiant effort but fall to the Golden Eagles 2-1. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Crusaders and Golden Eagles faced off in the final regular season game of the year with their spot secured as the 8th seed in the upcoming WHAC tournament. The Crusaders looked to gain momentum heading into the tournament with a big win over 5th seeded Cornerstone. In the first half, the Crusaders outplayed the Golden Eagles and were overall more aggressive, outshooting the Golden Eagles 5-2 in the first half. The Crusaders would also jump out in the lead in the first half with a goal from Rhiannon Holmes assisted by Morgan Stack to take a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Crusaders continued to stay aggressive offensively totaling 8 shots in the second half but it was the Golden Eagles who would find the back of the net with goals in the 54th and 60th minute to mount the comeback and take down the Crusaders 2-1.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The Crusaders finished with 13 shots (5 on goal) while the Golden Eagles had 9 shots (5 on goal). 
  • The Crusaders had four corner kicks to the Golden Eagles two.
  • Vitoria Sia and Canses Gibson each led the team with three total shots with one on goal.

UP NEXT:

Madonna will take on the conference one seed and number 4 nationally ranked Aquinas Saints in the first round of the WHAC Conference Tournament on Wednesday, November 6th. Kickoff is TBD.
