GAME PREVIEW: Women’s Soccer prepares for rematch against Racers

LIVONIA, Mich.– The Madonna University women's soccer team is traveling to Lima, Ohio for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference semifinal against the Racers of the University of Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday April 7 at Racer Stadium at 4 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY
  • UNOH leads the all-time series 10-1 and has won the last three games. The sole Crusader victory came in the WHAC semifinal back in 2018. Madonna is 1-7 all-time at Northwestern Ohio. 
  • The previous matchup between these two schools was back on March 22, that saw UNOH grab the 3-2 win in overtime in the 95th minute. 

ABOUT MADONNA
  • Madonna comes into the game with an overall record of 8-4 and 6-3 in the WHAC. In the Crusaders last match they traveled to Rochester University and came away with a 5-0 win back on Tuesday February 30. 
  • The Crusaders finished their season winning three of their last four games with wins against Rochester, Lourdes University and University of Michigan-Dearborn. The loss came against Cornerstone University in overtime. 
  • Leading the Crusaders on the offensive side of the ball is freshman Abby Werthman, senior Nicolette Vultaggio and sophomore Mary Philimona as they lead the team in points with 11, 10 and nine respectively. Werthman was named to the WHAC Second Team All-Conference earlier this week.
  • On the defensive end sophomore Alex Thomas has seen the field for the majority of the season as she has started eight games. Throughout those games she has tallied 17 saves and has a 1.35 goals against average. Other key defenders for Madonna are seniors Emma Werthman and Alyssa Benvenuti. Benvenuti was named to the WHAC First Team All-Conference earlier this week.  

ABOUT UNOH
  • Northwestern Ohio will be coming in the game with a 8-2 record overall and 7-2 throughout WHAC play. In their quarterfinal match against Indiana Tech they were able to hold onto a 2-0 victory. 
  • The Racers are currently on a six game win streak, including two overtime wins against Madonna and Siena Heights. 
  • Statistically for the Racers they are led by freshman Ariana Mondiri and junior Agnes Stefansdottir who have 18 and nine points respectively. Both Mondiri and Stefansdottir were named to the WHAC First Team. 
  • In goal Ilke Brandsma has started seven games for Northwestern Ohio and allowed eight goals throughout the season She has also collected 13 saves and has only allowed 1.03 goals per game. The Racers also had three freshman defenders Shakira O'Malley, Hedda Isaksson, and Annika Dincher who were all named to the WHAC All-Newcomer team. 

WHAC TOURNAMENT
  • The Crusaders advanced to the semifinal game after their quarterfinal matchup against Siena Heights was canceled due to COVID Protocols.
  • The winner of this semifinal matchup will either go up against the top-seeded Aquinas College or the fourth-seeded Cornerstone University which will take place on Wednesday April 7 with a 7 p.m. kickoff. 
  • The championship match will be played at the highest remaining seed on Saturday April 10.
