Women’s Soccer picks up win in regular-season finale against Warriors

THE BASICS

Score: Madonna University 5, Rochester University 0

Location: Ultimate Soccer Arena, Pontiac, Mich.

PONTIAC, Mich.– The Madonna University women's soccer team traveled up the road to Pontiac to go up against the Warriors of Rochester University. The Crusaders held onto the ball for the majority of the game as they tallied a total of 61 shots throughout the game. 

Following the game today the Crusaders moved back into the third seed for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament that begins on Saturday April 3. The Crusaders will take on the Saints of Siena Heights University. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Nicolette Vultaggio scored the first goal of the game for the Crusaders as she received a pass from Karina Arnold and was able to get it underneath the goalies hands for the 1-0 lead. 
  • 10 minutes later Mary Philimona received a cross from Sydnie Voss that was just out of reach of the goalie as she was able to knock it into the back of the net. 
  • Just over a minute later Abby Werthman received a pass from Philimona that she was able to hit into the back of the net. 
  • The second half mainly saw more shots from the Crusader offense as the next goal came in the 75th minute from Nikki Verant as she was able to score off of an assist from Werthman. 
  • The final goal of the game came off the foot of Alexandra Sherlock as she got a pass from Megan Verant
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Madonna tallied 30 shots on goal throughout the game as opposed to the one from Rochester. 
  • The Crusaders kept the offensive pressure on and were able to get six corner kicks, while the Warriors did not register one. 
  • A total of fifteen Blue and Gold players created shots throughout the game as they were led by Vultaggio with 11 shots and five on goal. 
MILESTONES
  • With the goal today, Nicolette Vultaggio passes Ashley Parent to make herself all alone in third place on the all-time career goals mark with 45. 
  • Nikki Verant tallied her first goal of her career with her goal in the 75thminute of the game. 
  • The Crusaders as a team had 61 shots throughout the game, this is the second most shots the Crusaders have had in a single game. This mark sits only behind the team's 81 shots against Tri-State back on October 19, 2002.

  • The Crusaders will play in the WHAC tournament that will begin on Saturday April 3. The Crusaders will face off against the Saints of Siena Heights University with kickoff happening at 2 PM.
