Strong pitching propels Crusaders to a 2-1 start

BRIGHTON, Mich. - The Madonna University softball team, which received votes in the preseason coaches’ poll, showed what kind of a well-rounded team they can be as they opened the 2021 campaign with a 2-1 afternoon at the Legacy Opener hosted by Concordia University (Mich.) at the Legacy Center in Brighton on Friday.

The day began at 7 a.m. with a 6-1 win over Judson University (Ill.), was followed by the reserve teams’ 1-1 tie with Oakland Community College, then came a 1-0 loss to No. 22 Saint Xavier University (Ill.) and the day was capped by a 9-1 thumping of Clarke University (Iowa).

Pitching and offensive rallies were the story of the day for the Blue and Gold as the pitchers in all three varsity contests allowed one run or less in their outings and the starters combined for 17 strikeouts. Emily Pawelski highlighted the offense with a 3-for-4 day with three RBI and two runs scored, including the first home run of the year.
